You can save quite a bit of money using postcards for thank you cards and save the date cards in your wedding. The last three or four save the date cards I received were postcards. Use your engagement photo and print postcards online to make a great card for the recipient to post on their refrigerator. You can photoshop the date prominently in the front and nothing has to be written on the postcard itself unless you want to include a message.
Thank you cards can also be postcards. Use a photo of you and the groom showing “thank you” in some way. I’ve seen pictures where a bride and groom hold up signs saying Thank and You. I’ve seen “thank you” written in the sand at the honeymoon location. I’m sure there are many other creative ways to show the words thank you on a card.
The nice thing about these types of save the date and thank you cards is that they are personalized so people feel more appreciated. Even though they realize that the same card was made for everybody, there is something to say about receiving a thank you that required the bride and groom to set up, take an extra picture, and create vs silver letters on a small white card that you pick up at a store.
It also saves you on postage. As of May 2010 postcard stamps are $0.28 and first class stamps are $0.44. This is one of those things that money saving wedding sites tend to point out often (along with not choosing invites that take extra postage), but honestly it is not that great of savings. It is a bonus, but not worth changing if you do not like them. It will save you a whopping $16 for 100 cards. Depending on your wedding size that may or may not make a difference. If you can save hundreds on your wedding gown, flowers, and more then $16 for 100 cards is just a drop in the bucket.
I do think that the personalization makes them better than first class mail. And you may be able to save money on creating the cards yourself and using cheap postcard printing to make them.
